In figure skating, Niles was a ten-time U.S. national champion in pairs skating with his partner Theresa Weld Blanchard. The duo competed in three Olympic Winter Games, in 1920, 1924, and 1928. They finished consistently among the top ten skaters at each competition, a testament to their skills and compatibility on the ice.

Parallel to his figure skating career, Niles also had notable success in the sport of tennis. He played in the U.S. National Championships (now known as the U.S. Open) multiple times, reaching the quarterfinals in mixed doubles in 1922.
